With funding from NSF's Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program, OMAX has developed an ultra-precision micro-abrasive water jet machining system-the ning® center for the development of ultra-precision micro-abrasive water jet machining systems. The machining center can cut very small parts, suitable materials include titanium, carbon fiber, stainless steel, graphite, glass, copper and many other materials, cutting process will not change the material integrity, positioning accuracy can reach 15 microns.
The MicroMAX system incorporates the company's proprietary linear traction drive system, which uses optical encoders that provide up to 0.1 micron of positioning accuracy, ensuring ultra-high-precision systems. The cutting platform is mounted on a set of vibration isolators to minimize external vibrations from the floor. The tank cooling package allows the water temperature to be controlled within a few degrees, helping to avoid unwanted dimensional changes in the material during processing. The system is also equipped with mobile workstations, equipment operators can easily set up and monitor. The MicroMAX system covers a small footprint and is suitable for any manufacturing floor or prototype lab.
MicroMAX systems are particularly adept at machining complex geometries with tight tolerances using brittle, non-conductive and reflective materials that are difficult to machine with other high-precision machining processes such as laser and wire-cut machining. MicroMAX system can be used in medical, semiconductor manufacturing, aerospace and other industries, the cutting of micro-parts. The company has partnered with NASA JPL to use the system to create the microspine flexures required for asteroid clamping tools.
